Why Did Karnataka Police Refuse Permission for the Vijay Hazare Trophy Match at Chinnaswamy Stadium?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Dec 23 (NationPress) The Karnataka Police have refused permission for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy match featuring Delhi and Andhra Pradesh at Chinnaswamy Stadium, citing significant safety and crowd control issues. This decision follows a comprehensive inspection conducted by Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar, in collaboration with officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Fire Department, who identified critical deficiencies in the venue's infrastructure and emergency preparedness.
Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh addressed the media on Tuesday, explaining that, "A committee visited the stadium on Monday under the direction of the Home Department. Officers from various departments, including fire, Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), and police, conducted an inspection. Based on their report, permission for the match scheduled for Wednesday at Chinnaswamy Stadium has not been granted."
The Bengaluru City Police Commissioner had previously issued a 17-point advisory detailing essential safety measures. The committee verified compliance with these points and submitted its findings to the government.
According to police sources, the stadium's gates are considered too narrow to manage large crowds, particularly with Virat Kohli expected to be present.
Additionally, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) President Venkatesh Prasad made a last-minute appeal to state Home Minister G. Parameshwara for an exception, but authorities maintained their position.
On Monday, Minister Parameshwara announced the formation of a committee to evaluate the suitability of Chinnaswamy Stadium for hosting the Vijay Hazare Trophy match.
The minister convened a meeting at the Vidhana Soudha with officials from KSCA and senior police personnel to discuss arrangements for the match.
Parameshwara stated, "KSCA has requested to hold the Vijay Hazare Trophy match without allowing public spectators. Only the match will be conducted, and no audience will be permitted."
It is important to note that a tragic incident occurred earlier, where 11 individuals lost their lives in a stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations on June 4.
