Why Did K’taka Home Minister Refuse Permission for Vijay Hazare Trophy Match at Chinnaswamy Stadium?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Dec 24 (NationPress) Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara has justified the administration's choice to deny permission for the Vijay Hazare Trophy cricket match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
In a statement to the media in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Parameshwara mentioned that Venkatesh Prasad, the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and former Indian fast bowler, had approached both him and the Chief Minister.
“The Justice Michael D’Cunha Commission presented a list of recommendations. This report was submitted to the KSCA, which is expected to respond to these recommendations,” he stated.
“It appears that the KSCA has not taken any action yet. During a prior meeting with Venkatesh Prasad, this issue was brought up. Consequently, a high-level committee was established. Upon inspection of the stadium, they discovered that none of the recommendations had been acted upon. Given this situation, the committee opted not to allow cricket matches to proceed,” Parameshwara elaborated.
He added that 17 recommendations were put forth to the KSCA, and hosting matches would be reconsidered once action is taken on these points.
The Karnataka Police have denied authorization for the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Delhi and Andhra Pradesh at Chinnaswamy Stadium, citing serious safety and crowd management issues.
This decision followed a comprehensive evaluation by Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, along with officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Fire Department, who identified significant deficiencies in venue infrastructure and emergency protocols.
Commissioner Singh remarked, "The committee visited the stadium on Monday as directed by the Home Department. Officers from various departments, including fire, Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), Greater Bengaluru Authority, and police, conducted an inspection. Based on their report, permission for Wednesday's match at Chinnaswamy Stadium has not been granted. The committee has also submitted a detailed report.”
Police sources highlighted that the stadium entrances were too narrow to accommodate large crowds, especially with Virat Kohli's presence expected.
It's worth noting that a tragic incident occurred on June 4, where 11 individuals lost their lives in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations.
