New Delhi, Dec 23 (NationPress) Indian cricket sensation Virat Kohli is poised to return to the domestic arena, setting his sights on the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26 for Delhi. However, cricket enthusiasts will miss the chance to see the iconic batsman in action, as Delhi's opening match against Andhra at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium will take place behind closed doors.

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the Karnataka government plans to issue a directive to the KSCA to conduct matches without spectators. The BCCI's Centre of Excellence is being considered as a backup venue if police approval for the Chinnaswamy Stadium is not granted.

Initially, the KSCA proposed to permit access to two stands, accommodating 2000-3000 fans if fully utilized. However, the government rejected this idea, citing concerns over security and compliance, while efforts are ongoing to address these issues.

The government aims to prevent disorder around the venue during the festive season, especially with high-profile players participating. The presence of Kohli and Rishabh Pant for the initial two matches prompted the KSCA to relocate the venue from Alur to Chinnaswamy to resolve logistical complications.

The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru has emerged as a central hub for Indian cricket, offering premier infrastructure and facilities designed for player development. Hosting several domestic matches provides an optimal environment for both emerging and experienced players to refine their skills. If Delhi's matches occur at the CoE, it will mark Kohli’s inaugural competitive appearance there, creating a memorable occasion for him and his teammates.

Kohli's last outing for India was during the ODI series against South Africa, where he excelled, recording two centuries and a half-century across three matches. He aims to carry this momentum into domestic cricket, making a meaningful impact for Delhi before returning to international duty. Following the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kohli is expected to participate in India’s ODI series against New Zealand, commencing on January 11.

As per BCCI regulations, centrally contracted players are required to engage in domestic tournaments when not on international duty. Consequently, Kohli's involvement in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will offer invaluable experience and leadership to the Delhi squad, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant serving as captain during the tournament, while Kohli will take on a senior role within the team.
