Bengaluru Set to Host Exciting ATP Challenger Tennis Events This May
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 28 (NationPress) Indian tennis is poised for a significant enhancement as the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) gears up to host two back-to-back ATP Challenger 50 tournaments at the S.M. Krishna Tennis Stadium in Bengaluru from May 11 to 17 and May 18 to 24.
This two-week event will place Bengaluru at the forefront of men's professional tennis in India, providing players with consecutive opportunities to earn crucial ATP ranking points on home turf. These tournaments are integral to the ATP Challenger Tour, serving as a crucial link between the ITF circuit and the ATP Tour, and are vital for nurturing emerging talent.
The announcement follows the successful conclusion of the 10th edition of the Bengaluru Open 125 in January and India's thrilling 3–2 victory in the Davis Cup against the Netherlands earlier this month.
For KSLTA, hosting these events back-to-back is part of a broader long-term vision. “The acquisition of two consecutive ATP Challenger 50 tournaments underscores our dedication to establishing Bengaluru as a premier tennis hub. An active international calendar at home enhances the entire ecosystem, benefiting players, coaches, officials, and young enthusiasts in attendance. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Sports Authority of India, the Government of Karnataka, and our incredible sponsors for their unwavering support in making this possible,” stated Maheshwar Rao, IAS, Chief Commissioner of The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and Honorary Secretary of KSLTA.
Anil Dhupar, Secretary General of the All India Tennis Association (AITA), remarked, “The All-India Tennis Association is immensely grateful to KSLTA for orchestrating these two additional ATP Challenger 50 events in India this May. Our vision for 2026 is clear: to foster a more robust and competitive tennis ecosystem in the country. Regular home competition at a high level accelerates player development and instills confidence. AITA is committed to supporting these events in every possible way.”
He referred to the recent Davis Cup victory, saying, “That achievement was a powerful testament to what Indian tennis can accomplish on the world stage. To maintain and build upon this momentum, our players must have consistent access to elite competition, and these two tournaments arrive at a crucial time for Indian tennis.”
Tournament Director and Hon. Jt. Secretary of KSLTA, Sunil Yajaman, highlighted the competitive advantage of the two-week format, stating, “We are thrilled to host these two weeks of consecutive ATP challengers in Bengaluru. Our sincere appreciation goes to the ATP Challenger Tour for placing their trust in us by assigning these back-to-back events. Professional tennis demands physical stamina, financial resilience, and mental fortitude.
“A home event of this nature mitigates travel fatigue and allows players to maintain peak competitive play. This continuity can lead to significant ATP ranking improvements for our athletes. We firmly believe that our Indian players require more of these ATP Challenger tournaments at home, and I am confident they will leverage this opportunity while the visiting players will relish the warm hospitality Bengaluru is known for during international tennis events.
“With the upcoming months leading to the Davis Cup qualifiers Round 2 against Korea, this presents a fantastic opportunity for Indian players to train as a cohesive unit, something that often doesn't occur during the tour,” he said.
Through this two-week event, KSLTA is reinforcing Bengaluru's stature as India’s leading international tennis venue and one of Asia's most reliable destinations for international tennis.
