BGT 2024-25: KL Rahul Expresses Desire to Secure Spot in Playing XI

Adelaide, Dec 4 (NationPress) India's cricketer KL Rahul stated that he simply wants to be part of the playing XI as the batting lineup faces changes with skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill returning for the second Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide.

When questioned about his batting order with Rohit rejoining the XI for the pink ball day-night Test, Rahul offered a playful response. 'I have been informed of my batting position, but I was also instructed not to disclose it to anyone,' he told reporters during the pre-match press briefing.

Rahul underscored his willingness to adjust to any batting position, showcasing his team-first mindset. 'I just want to be in the playing XI, go out there, and bat for the team. I strive to comprehend what is required in a specific situation and how I can contribute. Fortunately, I have batted in various positions, so it doesn't trouble me as much anymore.'

The wicketkeeper-batter, who has played in five different spots in Test cricket—including No.3, No.4, and No.6 in addition to opening—recognized that early in his career, switching roles posed psychological challenges.

'At first, adjusting to different positions, particularly in those initial 20-25 balls, was tough. I often contemplated, 'How early can I attack?' But with experience across formats, it has become simpler,' he remarked.

Alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rahul was entrusted with opening, playing a crucial role in a partnership exceeding 200 runs, the first of its kind by an Indian opening duo in Tests against Australia. This partnership established the groundwork for India's supremacy in the second innings and highlighted Rahul's capability to adapt and perform under stress.

Reflecting on his preparations for the role, Rahul mentioned, 'I was informed quite early that I might have an opportunity to open. I did not participate in the New Zealand series, which gave me ample time to prepare. Opening is a role I have fulfilled frequently, so I was aware of my strategies and how I intended to score runs.'
