Gwalior, Feb 10 (NationPress) The defending champions Bihar are set to defend their title at the Sub-Junior National Rugby Sevens Championships, which begins on Tuesday at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) with participation from 21 teams in the U15 girls' category.
This tournament represents a crucial development for Indian Rugby, as it introduces contact rugby for the Sub-Junior age group (U15). This shift from touch rugby to contact rugby aligns with the federation's goal to fortify the Indian national age-grade teams, preparing them to compete against teams on the Asian stage.
The championship will unfold over two days—February 11 and 12—where 252 players from 21 participating states will compete for the prestigious trophy.
Maharashtra and Rajasthan, ranked second and third respectively, will be aiming to challenge Bihar and secure the gold medal.
“The future of Rugby in our country is dependent on the number of young people who choose this sport. A significant portion of our players representing the Indian National team began their careers in age-grade events like the Sub-Junior National Championships. Thus, the upcoming U-15 National Championships are essential for Rugby India,” commented Rahul Bose, president of the Indian Rugby Football Union.
“We are thrilled to host these championships at the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior. Our thanks to LNIPE for their support in hosting this event,” he added.
