Key contributors to this remarkable achievement were three resilient young women - Anshu Kumari, Saloni Kumari, and Alpana Kumari - whose tenacity not only led their team to triumph but also exemplified a broader narrative of empowerment, resilience, and hope.

Remarkably, ten out of the twelve players in Bihar's gold-winning team emerged from the ASMITA League (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action), a grassroots movement that has transformed the landscape of women's sports in Bihar over the past three years. For many of these young athletes, rugby was once an unfamiliar sport; today, it has become an integral part of their identities.

“None of us knew about rugby just a few years back. We explored different sports, and circumstances led us to rugby. The introduction of the ASMITA League brought the sport to our districts, schools, and lives,” the trio shared amidst the celebrations.

“The league provided us with a platform, a sense of purpose, and the confidence to pursue our dreams. That’s where our journey began.”

Anshu, a Class 12 student whose father runs a humble sweet shop, made headlines by winning a bronze medal at the U-14 nationals in Pune. Saloni, the daughter of a street vendor, proudly recalls leading India’s U-18 team at the Asian Rugby Championship in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Alpana - who has battled through multiple injuries, including a fractured collarbone and a severe road accident - stood resilient, demonstrating how determination can overcome adversity.

“This gold medal is not just for us; it represents every girl who dares to dream beyond limits. It’s dedicated to every parent who has supported us and every coach who believed in our potential,” they expressed, their eyes gleaming with pride.

The Khelo India Youth Games have also become a crucial launchpad for emerging athletes. For many like Anshu, Saloni, and Alpana, a KIYG medal signifies more than just achievement; it opens doors to national camps, job prospects, and long-term recognition.

“We’ve witnessed seniors secure government jobs after winning medals. That’s our aspiration. We’re optimistic that this gold will bring us closer to that goal,” they said, joining the festivities for the boys’ rugby team, who also triumphed over Odisha to claim gold later that evening.
