The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has formally welcomed remarks by Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal expressing optimism about Bihar eventually securing its own Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, calling the industrialist's vision 'highly motivating' for the state's cricket ecosystem. The statement, issued from Patna on 22 May, also acknowledged similar sentiments from Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary regarding cricket development in the state.

What Agarwal and Choudhary Said

Anil Agarwal, who has deep personal ties to Bihar, recently highlighted the state's growing cricketing strength and expressed confidence that its passion and talent base could eventually support a full IPL franchise. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has separately voiced support for expanding cricket infrastructure and creating better competitive pathways for players from the state. The BCA said both sets of remarks signal a broader political and industrial alignment behind Bihar's cricketing ambitions.

Bihar's Current IPL Footprint

According to BCA Secretary Ziaul Arfeen, three cricketers from Bihar are currently active within IPL setups. Vaibhav Suryavanshi is contracted with Rajasthan Royals, Saqib Hussain is part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Mohammad Izhar is associated with Mumbai Indians. Arfeen noted that all three are performing consistently and contributing meaningfully to their respective franchises. Beyond the contracted players, several Bihar cricketers are also working with IPL teams as net bowlers — an entry point that the BCA sees as a pipeline for future talent.

Infrastructure Push Over Five Years

BCA President Harsh Vardhan said the association has worked continuously over the past five to six years to upgrade cricket infrastructure across the state. He credited the Bihar Government's cooperation as central to those gains, adding that improved facilities are now visibly translating into better performances at national-level competitions. The BCA also acknowledged the contributions of former BCA President Rakesh Kumar Tiwari and former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in laying the groundwork for the current phase of growth.

What an IPL Franchise Would Mean for Bihar

Bihar currently lacks a dedicated IPL franchise — a gap the BCA believes reflects historical underinvestment rather than a shortage of talent. An IPL team would bring sustained investment in local academies, scouting networks, and match-day infrastructure, multiplying opportunities for the state's large pool of aspiring cricketers. Notably, Bihar's re-admission to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2019 after years of suspension was itself a turning point; the IPL franchise conversation represents the next logical step in that rehabilitation.

Road Ahead

The BCA expressed confidence that continued backing from the state government and industrialists of Agarwal's stature would accelerate infrastructure development and give young players access to better facilities and competitive exposure. No formal bid or BCCI process has been announced, and any new IPL franchise expansion remains subject to the board's own timeline and commercial decisions. The association, however, is clearly positioning Bihar as ready — in talent, intent, and institutional support — whenever that window opens.
