Ahmedabad, March 28 (NationPress) As the Mumbai Indians prepare for their upcoming match against the Gujarat Titans on Saturday, head coach Mahela Jayawardene provided an update regarding star pacer Jasprit Bumrah. He mentioned that although Bumrah is making good progress in his recovery, no specific timeline has been set for his return in the current season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Bumrah is presently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru due to a lower back injury that sidelined him during the second innings of the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. Consequently, he has not participated in any matches, including missing India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign.
“He is following his rehabilitation program diligently. Everything appears to be on track, but the NCA has not provided any timelines, so we will have to wait,” Jayawardene stated regarding Bumrah's situation.
The 31-year-old fast bowler is anticipated to rejoin the Mumbai squad sometime in April. In his absence, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar are managing the pace attack, while the team also introduced debutant Satyanarayana Raju in the season opener against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk last Sunday.
With captain Hardik Pandya returning from a one-match suspension for an over-rate violation from the previous season, Jayawardene hopes that Mumbai fans will move past the negative sentiments expressed towards Pandya after he was appointed captain over Rohit Sharma.
“It’s all part of cricket. Fans have their emotions, and I believe everyone has moved on from the past,” Jayawardene commented.
“It’s fascinating to see how loyalty operates even in the IPL. Over the last year, Pandya has accomplished much, and I trust that supporters will recognize this. We can all look forward to enjoying a great game of cricket together,” he concluded.
