London, March 18 (NationPress) Dan Burn etched his name into the annals of Newcastle United on Sunday by scoring in the Carabao Cup final, leading the team to their first domestic trophy in 70 years. This achievement coincided with the defender's first-ever national team call-up last Friday.
The towering center-back expressed feeling overlooked during former head coach Gareth Southgate’s time in charge of the national squad, yet he is now poised to embrace the opportunity with Thomas Tuchel, who is set to lead England for the first time in the upcoming international matches.
"I believe I have a good few years left, no retirement in sight! I felt I was overlooked, but I understood why - Gareth's efforts transformed England into what it is today. In my view, he managed the team more like a club, which benefited them. It was different from the past.
"It was about unity, but that sometimes worked against me. Therefore, with the arrival of the new manager, it felt like a fresh start. Fortunately, he has taken a chance on me, and I am eager to seize this opportunity."
Burn may make his international debut against Albania or Latvia during a double-header at Wembley.
Originally from Ashington and raised in Blyth, Burn has received his first call-up at 32, continuing an extraordinary journey that saw him released from the Magpies' Academy and working in a supermarket before joining Darlington and eventually returning to his childhood club to play and score in the Champions League.
Burn expressed pride in representing his hometown: "The North East is often overlooked in football. There aren't as many teams to draw players from. I am very proud to hail from Newcastle - I love sharing my roots with people,” he stated.
After finishing as runners-up in the last two European Championships and losing in the 2018 FIFA World Cup semifinals under Southgate, Tuchel arrives with the Three Lions eager for a trophy. With the next major tournament being the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Burn has set his sights on achieving his lifelong dream of representing the country on the grandest stage.
"I'm aiming to take it camp by camp and make the biggest impression I can to earn a spot in the next camp. Every child dreams of playing in a World Cup,” he added.
