Global Chess League Season 4: Carlsen returns, Divya debuts at Mumbai draft
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Global Chess League (GCL) is set to host its Season 4 Player Draft in Mumbai on 29 July, with the league itself scheduled to run in Bengaluru from 3 to 13 September. The draft marks the return of five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen after a year away from the league, and the debut of Divya Deshmukh, the reigning FIDE Women's World Cup champion, making her first appearance in the competition.
A Star-Studded Player Pool
The Season 4 player pool comprises 36 Grandmasters spanning multiple generations — from World Champions and World Cup winners to Olympiad medallists and top-ranked players on the international circuit. The marquee list includes Viswanathan Anand, the five-time World Champion; Javokhir Sindarov, winner of the 2025 FIDE World Cup; Koneru Humpy, the Women's World Rapid Champion; and former Women's World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk. World Championship challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi, ex-World Cup champion and Olympiad gold medallist Levon Aronian, reigning World Rapid Champion Volodar Murzin, and Indian Grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca are also in the pool, giving franchises a deep mix of established names and rising talent.
How the Draft Works
Each of the league's six franchises — Mumba Masters, American Gambits, Ganges Grandmasters, Triveni Continental Kings, Alaskan Knights, and Alpine APL Pipers — will build six-player squads across four categories: one Icon, two Superstar Men, two Superstar Women, and one Prodigy. The GCL's format uses a six-board rapid structure where every board carries equal weight, making squad balance as critical as individual brilliance.
What the League Said
Peeyush Dubey, Chairperson of the Global Chess League, said: 'Season 4 continues that journey with an outstanding player pool that reflects the quality and diversity of talent that the league continues to attract. We are excited to bring the league to Bengaluru, a city with a rich sporting tradition and a deep-rooted chess culture.' Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the league, added that 'the draft will shape the balance and competitiveness of every team heading into Season 4,' emphasising the format's equal emphasis on every player category.
GCL's Growing Footprint
Since its launch, the GCL has positioned itself as a franchise-based, mixed-team alternative to traditional chess competition. Season 3, the first hosted in India, introduced AI-powered in-arena features and an improved broadcast setup, and ended with Alpine SG Pipers lifting the trophy after a commanding final. The league also runs GCL Contenders, a global talent development programme designed to feed new players into the ecosystem. Season 4 in Bengaluru, with the championship match on 13 September, is expected to build on those benchmarks.
