New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Veteran shooter and Asian Games medalist Chain Singh has played a pivotal role in bringing home India's inaugural medal at the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun stage in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He clinched a bronze in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions (3P), marking the first final on the second day of competition.
The gold medal was claimed by Hungarian shooter Istvan Peni with a score of 461.0, marking his seventh ISSF gold, while China's Tian Jiaming secured silver with 458.8. Chain finished in third place, concluding the 45-shot final with a score of 443.7.
Earlier, all three Indian shooters, led by two-time Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Niraj Kumar, alongside Rio Olympian Chain, successfully qualified for the final, competing against top contenders including reigning world champion Alexander Schmirl from Austria.
Aishwary ranked second, narrowly ahead of Chain in third place. Both achieved identical scores of 589, with Chain losing a position based on accuracy. Niraj followed closely in fifth with a score of 587.
Niraj began the final strongly, sitting second after the initial five shots in the Kneeling position, but soon fell behind as Tomar and Singh advanced.
The two moved from fifth and sixth after the first Kneeling position to third and fourth following an impressive Prone position performance, ultimately solidifying a medal for India in the final Standing position.
Unfortunately, Tomar missed out on a medal after scoring 7.8 for his 41st shot, while Peni and Tian were locked in a competitive battle for gold and silver. Schmirl exited in fifth place after the 42nd shot, allowing Chain to secure a well-deserved medal, marking his return to the ISSF podium after three years.
The day also featured the first Precision round of the women's 25m pistol qualifiers, where double Olympic bronze medalist Manu Bhaker delivered a score of 291 out of 300, placing fourth. Her compatriot Simranpreet Kaur Brar was also in qualifying contention with a score of 290, currently sitting in sixth place. Esha Singh scored 285, trailing in 12th.
