Colombo, Oct 30 (NationPress) Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that the newly appointed national coaches Julian Wood and Rene Ferdinands will collaborate with current support staff members Thilina Kandamby and Piyal Wijetunge on a rotational basis for the men's cricket team.
This decision marks a significant shift in SLC’s high-performance framework, as coaching roles are now being shared among national squads, including age-group and women's teams. “These coaches are not exclusively assigned to the national team. They serve as national coaches, but that does not imply they should only focus on the men’s national team,” said SLC CEO Ashley de Silva, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
“We will determine who joins the teams on a rotational basis, tour by tour. This is how our high-performance center functions now,” he continued.
The implementation of a rotational coaching model is uncommon in international cricket and resembles the structure used in South Africa, where coaches like Imran Khan and Paul Adams are assigned flexibly across teams. Under SLC’s plan, Wood, Ferdinands, Kandamby, and Wijetunge will rotate based on tour necessities, with decisions made by the executive committee.
“These coaches are still part of the organization; their contracts have not been terminated. Regardless of their assignments, they must be ready to contribute. Wood and Ferdinands are designated similarly, ensuring they work across various teams. The executive committee will decide who travels on tours,” added de Silva.
Wood, known for his power-hitting expertise, made a positive impression during a recent short-term program and has secured a one-year contract. Ferdinands, an expert in biomechanics, brings valuable experience from his roles with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Kandamby has been Sri Lanka’s batting coach since December 2023, while Wijetunge has been a dedicated spin coach since 2006. Sri Lanka's upcoming challenges include an ODI series in Pakistan this November, followed by a T20I tri-series with Zimbabwe. SLC has not yet confirmed which coaches will accompany the squad.
