Sanath Jayasuriya on Upcoming SLC Meeting After T20 World Cup Disappointment
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) Former Sri Lankan cricket star Sanath Jayasuriya, who served as the head coach for the national team during the recently held ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, announced that the officials and members of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will convene a meeting on Tuesday to strategize future initiatives following their inability to reach the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.
“Tomorrow, we have a meeting with Sri Lanka Cricket, where we will outline our future plans. Sri Lanka showcased some commendable performances in their matches. I will provide further insights once the meeting concludes,” Jayasuriya communicated to IANS on Monday.
After a narrow loss to Pakistan, which marked the end of their World Cup journey, Jayasuriya indicated his intention to resign as head coach. Though he has not formally informed SLC of his decision, he suggested that this World Cup would be his last role.
"I felt it was time to pass the baton to someone else. About two months ago, during the England series, I expressed that I did not expect to continue in this position for long. My decision was made back then. I aimed to depart as coach on a positive note during the World Cup, but I am disappointed that I was unable to achieve that,” the seasoned player remarked after Sri Lanka's final clash against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.
Despite his intent to resign, Jayasuriya did not definitively state that he would do so immediately. Sri Lanka is set to engage in a limited-overs series against Afghanistan starting March 13, although this series is now uncertain due to rising tensions in West Asia. The board may wish for him to remain for this tour.
"My contract extends until June. I have not officially communicated with SLC yet. They are unaware that I plan to mention this. I must discuss it with them. If they can find a suitable replacement, then that would certainly be beneficial,” he mentioned.
As co-hosts of the T20 World Cup alongside India, Sri Lanka had a lackluster tournament experience, struggling to maintain consistency in both their batting and bowling.
Placed in a challenging group, Sri Lanka found it difficult to build momentum after early hurdles. They secured victories in three out of four matches during the initial group stage of the T20 World Cup, including a significant win against Australia. However, injuries to key players Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana hampered their progress, resulting in a disappointing end to their Super Eights campaign after losses to England, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
