Johannesburg, Jan 17 (NationPress) South Africa’s bowling lineup has faced yet another setback as Gerald Coetzee, who was expected to step in for Anrich Nortje in the Champions Trophy squad, was unable to play in the Joburg Super Kings’ (JSK) SA20 match against the Pretoria Capitals.

Coetzee is grappling with a hamstring injury, raising concerns about his availability for the upcoming tournament in the following weeks. Reports from ESPNcricinfo indicate that his fitness is under close observation.

No official reason has been given for his absence; however, Coetzee had just made a return from a prior injury. Given the conditions on the field that would have suited his pace-bowling capabilities, he was anticipated to be part of the playing XI.

His last appearance for JSK was against Durban’s Super Giants at Kingsmead, where he marked his return to competitive cricket after suffering a groin injury during a Test match against Sri Lanka in Durban. This previous injury cut his international summer short, following a hip issue and a lengthy 12-week conditioning regimen. Between his only match in MLC in July and a domestic game for the Titans in October, Coetzee faced a significant period away from the game.

Fortunately, he returned in good shape, participating in all four T20Is against India and achieving figures of 4 for 85 in his first Test against Sri Lanka before facing another injury challenge. Just two days ago, Coetzee made a commendable comeback, taking 2 for 32 in three overs.

Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach and selector, had previously confirmed that Coetzee was in the running for a spot in the Champions Trophy, although he was initially left out in favor of the more seasoned Nortje. With Nortje now ruled out due to a back injury, Coetzee is expected to be called up if he recovers. If he remains unavailable, Walter will need to explore South Africa’s reserve talent.

The current squad features Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder. Should an extra pacer be necessary, candidates include 18-year-old Kwena Maphaka, recent ODI debutant Corbin Bosch, or death-bowling expert Ottneil Baartman. Unfortunately, the list of injuries keeps expanding. Nandre Burger is out for the season due to a lower back stress fracture, while Lizaad Williams is in recovery from knee surgery. Daryn Dupavillon, who played for Pretoria Capitals, has also been sidelined from the SA20 due to a hamstring injury.

Dupavillon marks the eighth seamer to suffer an injury this season. The injury roster includes Ngidi (groin), Coetzee, Mulder (broken finger), Nortje (broken toe and back), Williams, Baartman, and Burger. While most, except for Burger, Nortje, Williams, and now Coetzee, have made their returns, South Africa’s fast-bowling depth is under immense pressure.
