Paarl, Jan 27 (NationPress) South Africa’s prospects in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have further declined as injury worries plague crucial players. David Miller, the captain of the Paarl Royals in the current SA20, exited the field during his team’s last home match against Durban’s Super Giants, appearing to incur an injury while fielding.

This situation adds to an increasing list of injury challenges that could impact South Africa’s lineup for the prestigious event commencing on February 19.

As reported by ESPNCricinfo, the incident transpired in the 14th over when Marcus Stoinis played a shot through the covers. Miller attempted to intercept the ball but was unsuccessful, and shortly after, he departed the field with the assistance of the Royals’ medical staff. Although he managed to walk unaided, he ascended the stairs to the changeroom with noticeable difficulty. The extent of the injury is yet to be determined, but it has raised alarms regarding his participation in the Champions Trophy.

Compounding South Africa’s challenges is Lungi Ngidi, who has missed his fourth straight match for the Royals, having participated in only three out of eight contests in the SA20. Ngidi, who was sidelined for the entire international summer due to a groin injury, is being cautiously reintroduced to competitive cricket.

The Royals’ management has stated that his return is being handled with care to prevent further setbacks. Nevertheless, his lack of match fitness is a concern for South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter.

With the Champions Trophy approaching, South Africa's fast-bowling arsenal has been significantly thinned. Anrich Nortje, one of their top pacers, has already been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. To complicate matters, Gerald Coetzee, who was seen as Nortje’s probable replacement, is also unavailable for the SA20 because of a hamstring injury.

The management team now finds themselves racing against time to secure a replacement for Nortje, with the ICC’s squad submission deadline fast approaching on February 11.
