Key Takeaways
Johannesburg, Jan 31 (NationPress) Veteran left-handed batter David Miller has been officially cleared to participate in the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup after successfully passing a fitness assessment, as confirmed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Saturday.
The 36-year-old player experienced an adductor injury during his final league match with Paarl Royals in the SA20 league, but he has now regained fitness to represent the Proteas in the prestigious tournament commencing on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka.
Miller boasts an impressive record, having participated in 133 T20 Internationals for South Africa, accumulating 2630 runs at a strike rate of 140.56. “Proteas Men’s batter David Miller has been medically cleared for next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka,” stated CSA.
“He successfully underwent a fitness test this week following an adductor strain incurred while playing for Paarl Royals during the Betway SA20. He is expected to join the squad on Sunday as they depart for Mumbai from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg,” the statement continued.
South Africa had previously called up Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs after Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira were sidelined due to a hamstring injury and a shoulder fracture, respectively. Additionally, pacer Lungi Ngidi is dealing with a leg issue sustained during the SA20, but is anticipated to be fit for the T20 World Cup.
Under the leadership of Aiden Markram, South Africa is placed in Group D of the forthcoming Men’s T20 World Cup, alongside Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates. Their campaign kicks off on February 9 against Canada at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Before launching their campaign, South Africa will face India in a warm-up match, reminiscent of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup final, at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on February 4. Recently, the two teams met in India, where the hosts secured the five-match T20I series 3-1 in December.
