Cardiff, Sep 9 (NationPress) South Africa faces a significant setback as they prepare for their three-match T20 International series against England, with seasoned batsman David Miller sidelined due to an injury.
On Tuesday, Cricket South Africa announced that the 36-year-old sustained a hamstring injury while playing in The Hundred for the Northern Superchargers.
"David Miller has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20 International (T20I) series against England due to a right hamstring strain," CSA stated via social media. "Miller picked up the injury during the last week of The Hundred while playing for the Northern Superchargers. He has not been able to recover in time for the T20I series commencing at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Wednesday."
No replacement has been announced for the Aiden Markram-led squad, which now consists of 14 players. Miller, who also missed the prior ODI series, remains integral to South Africa's long-term strategy. Captain Temba Bavuma recently emphasized that the left-handed batsman continues to be part of the Proteas' roadmap for the 2027 World Cup.
In a positive development for the coaching team, Cricket South Africa revealed that former Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel will join the T20I squad as a bowling consultant for the series. Morkel, with over 100 limited-overs internationals under his belt and experience in global T20 leagues, brings essential expertise to support Markram's team.
"Former Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel joins the T20I support staff as a bowling consultant for the series," the statement detailed.
In the previous ODI series, England triumphed over South Africa with an impressive 342-run victory in the final match at Southampton, marking a new record for the largest victory margin by runs in men's ODI history. This surpassed the previous record of 317 runs set by India against Sri Lanka in 2023 by 25 runs.
The series kicks off at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on Wednesday, before moving to the Ageas Bowl in Southampton and The Oval in London.
