Jordan Hermann Withdraws from NZ T20I Series Due to Injury
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hamilton, March 17 (NationPress) South Africa's Jordan Hermann will miss the remainder of the T20I series against New Zealand due to a right hamstring injury. This unfortunate setback occurred during his debut T20I match at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, where he sustained the injury while fielding, thus exiting the game prematurely. Subsequent scans revealed a grade two tear. As of now, the Proteas have not announced a replacement for Hermann.
Cricket South Africa confirmed, “Jordan Hermann has been ruled out for the rest of the five-match T20 International series against New Zealand following a right hamstring injury. The left-handed batsman injured himself while fielding in his debut on Sunday at the Bay Oval and left the field without returning to bat. The injury was later confirmed as a grade two tear, with no replacement named yet.”
Currently, South Africa leads the five-match series 1-2 after claiming a decisive victory against the T20 World Cup finalists in the series opener. The Proteas showcased a strong all-round performance, defeating New Zealand by seven wickets in the first T20I.
In that match, after opting to bat, the BlackCaps faced an early collapse as Gerald Coetzee took two wickets in the opening overs, dismissing Devon Conway and Tom Latham. Ottneil Baartman further dismantled the batting lineup with two quick wickets, while a run-out left New Zealand reeling at 35/5 during the powerplay. Although Mitchell Santner (15) and James Neesham (26) tried to stabilize the innings, debutant Nqobani Mokoena shone with three wickets, helping to bowl New Zealand out for just 91 in 14.3 overs.
Chasing a target of 92, South Africa faced some early challenges but Connor Esterhuizen steadied the innings, finishing with an impressive 35* off 44 balls. Despite tight bowling from Santner and Cole McConchie, the target was never a major threat. Esterhuizen, supported by Dian Forrester (15), led the chase effectively, sealing the win with a six, as South Africa reached 92/3 in 16.4 overs.
The second T20I is scheduled to take place at Seddon Park on Tuesday.
