Texas, June 19 (NationPress) Mexico secured their second victory in the Concacaf Gold Cup group stage by defeating Suriname with a score of 2-0 at AT&T Stadium on Thursday (IST).
Under the guidance of Javier Aguirre, the team displayed a strong performance from the outset. Although they couldn't convert their dominance into goals during the first half, they consistently posed threats to the Suriname defense.
In the opening 45 minutes, Mexico enjoyed a greater share of possession and ball control, with Alexis Vega, Julian Quinones, and Roberto Alvarado crafting several opportunities, yet failing to find the back of the net.
On the other hand, Suriname maintained an organized defense, looking for counterattack chances but didn't significantly trouble Angel Malagon. The breakthrough came in the 57th minute when Cesar Montes headed in a corner kick to give Mexico a 1-0 lead.
Just six minutes later, Montes struck again, capitalizing on a rebound from another set piece to double the score. His two goals were pivotal for the national team. Although Cesar 'Chino' Huerta celebrated a potential third goal, it was ruled offside.
With this result, Mexico now has six points and will face Costa Rica on Sunday, a match crucial for securing the top spot in the group.
In another match, Costa Rica triumphed 2-1 against the Dominican Republic in Group A.
Joao Urbaez opened the scoring in the 16th minute, marking the Dominican Republic's first lead ever at the Gold Cup, after a rebound from Keylor Navas on a shot from Dorny Romero. Manfred Ugalde equalized with a penalty in the 44th minute.
Ugalde then struck again in the 85th minute, connecting with a through pass to secure the win for Costa Rica.
Both goalkeepers, Keylor Navas and Xavier Valdez, ended with four saves each.
The Dominican Republic will stay in Arlington, Texas to face Suriname on Sunday.
