Sydney, Oct 21 (NationPress) With only a month remaining before the Ashes commence, seasoned Australian batsman Steve Smith shared insights regarding Pat Cummins, who is currently grappling with a stress fracture in his back. Smith mentioned that the bowler has several tasks to accomplish before he can resume bowling, asserting that he doesn’t require extensive preparation for the series.
Cummins has been dealing with a back injury that sidelined him from bowling since July, but he began running again a couple of weeks ago after scans indicated some positive progress in his lower-back stress issue.
Previously, Cummins confessed that he was more likely not to be ready for Perth and would need at least four weeks of bowling to prepare adequately.
"I observed him here the other day. He initiated his running while I was training as well. Although he hasn’t started bowling yet, he tends to adapt quickly. He probably requires less preparation than Josh (Hazlewood) or Starcy (Mitchell Starc)," Smith informed the press.
“Things can change rapidly, so we’ll see how everything unfolds for him.
“He has some tasks to fulfill before he can return to bowling, yet he appeared to be in good spirits, and the team is undoubtedly stronger with him in it.
“Fingers crossed he can recover, and whether he plays three Tests, five Tests, or two Tests… the more matches we can get from him, the better it is for the team,” he added.
As Cummins has not recommenced bowling yet, it seems increasingly likely that he will miss the opening Test in Perth, which starts in a month. Smith will captain Australia, feeling more at ease than during his previous tenure from 2013 to 2017.
"It's nothing out of the ordinary. I am aware of how the team functions. We’re in a solid position. So if it happens, I’ll be eager for it. The key is to approach it in my way. When I step onto the field, I have a specific style and preferred methodology, and I must remain authentic. I believe it has worked well when I’ve stood in over the past few years. It should be a smooth transition if that opportunity arises," Smith stated.
