New Delhi, Sep 10 (NationPress) Australia Test captain Pat Cummins has outlined a tentative timeline for his return to the bowling crease as he works to demonstrate his fitness ahead of the much-anticipated Ashes series against England.

Cummins has been dealing with back soreness since participating in Australia’s tour of the Caribbean in July. Recent scans revealed a lumbar bone stress in the affected area, leading to a diagnosis of a period of rest, which includes no running or bowling.

The Australia skipper is aware that he must confirm his readiness for the first Test against England in Perth, which kicks off on November 21. He hopes to resume bowling approximately four to six weeks prior to the Ashes series, as reported by ICC.

"I would imagine (I’d want to be bowling) at least a month out, maybe six weeks," Cummins stated during a Cricket Australia sponsorship event on Wednesday.

"However, I haven't given it much thought yet. It's still a wait-and-see situation. We have ample time, so we’ll plan our way back as we approach the date.

"Currently, for the next few weeks, my routine is quite light. There’s minimal running and absolutely no bowling.”

If Cummins is unable to play in the opening Test, fellow fast bowler Scott Boland is likely to step in, with seasoned players Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon expected to participate.

The reigning ICC World Test Championship runners-up also have a roster of emerging fast bowlers ready for their chance, and Cummins feels confident that Australia is well-equipped in the fast-bowling department.

"We find ourselves in a strong position," Cummins emphasized.

"A lot of strategy is involved. This isn’t just planned a month out; it’s a year-long process.

"We hope to have someone like Jhye Richardson available for part of the summer.

"There’s (Michael) Neser, Brendan Doggett who was part of squads last year, and Sean Abbott. I’m very confident in our depth.

"Clearly, there will be some (Sheffield) Shield cricket and white-ball matches before that to ensure everyone is ready and eager to play."

Point of View

I view Cummins' situation as a critical moment for Australia's cricket team. His leadership and performance are vital, yet the depth of our bowling lineup provides reassurance. The upcoming Ashes series will be a litmus test for both Cummins and the Australian squad.
