New Delhi, Oct 8 (NationPress) Australia’s captain Pat Cummins is anticipated to miss the Ashes opener in Perth, with the possibility of also being sidelined for the complete Test series against England. Recent scans have indicated that his back stress issue remains unresolved.
Since his participation in the Caribbean tour in July, Cummins has been experiencing back discomfort, with the latest scans confirming lumbar bone stress in the affected area.
As per a report from the Sydney Morning Herald, Cummins is unlikely to play in the opener on November 21 and may miss all five Tests, which leaves Steve Smith as the probable stand-in captain against England.
The 32-year-old pacer underwent a follow-up scan last week to assess his recovery ahead of the Test summer. Although the stress “hot spot” is healing, it hasn't yet improved enough for him to resume bowling, the report noted.
Cummins’ absence due to a back injury is a significant setback for Australia's aspirations to retain the Ashes urn, which they have held since 2018.
In his absence, fellow fast bowler Scott Boland is the most likely candidate to take his place, while seasoned players Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon are expected to participate.
Last month, the Australian Test captain indicated a rough timeline for his return to bowling.
"I’d imagine I would want to be back on the bowling crease at a minimum of a month out, maybe six weeks," Cummins stated. "But I haven't contemplated that in depth yet. It's still a waiting game. We've got ample time, so we will plan a route back as we get closer. For the upcoming weeks, it's quite light. Not much running and zero bowling," he added.
