Manchester, May 14 (NationPress) Manchester United's fullback Diogo Dalot acknowledged that the team has fallen short of the club's expectations this season. However, he emphasized that attaining UEFA Champions League qualification is the least they can achieve, given that the fans have endured as much hardship as the players this year.
Currently, Manchester United is positioned in 16th place in the Premier League standings, marking the club's most challenging domestic season to date. Yet, they still have the chance to conclude their season on a high note by competing in the finals of the Europa League against their English rivals, Tottenham Hotspur.
“Securing the Europa League title would alleviate some of the disappointment of this season. It’s clear to everyone that we have not met the club's standards, which are far higher. Our performance this season does not reflect what the club deserves, and we owe it to the fans who have suffered alongside us,” Dalot stated during a press conference ahead of the finals next Thursday (IST).
Joining Dalot was head coach Ruben Amorim, known for his candid approach during his time in England.
Amorim boldly expressed that he might need to consider resigning from his role if results do not improve following the team’s 0-2 defeat to West Ham on Sunday.
When questioned about his statements, Amorim clarified, “I am not planning to leave. Since my arrival, I have emphasized the importance of maintaining standards. I cannot ignore our poor results in the Premier League and not take accountability.”
Despite expecting a challenging match against Spurs, United can take comfort in the fact that the North London side is currently below them in the standings at 17th place, having had a disastrous season of their own.
