New Delhi, Aug 3 (NationPress) Following an underwhelming 2024-25 Premier League season, where Manchester United finished at a historic low of 15th place and failed to secure UEFA Champions League qualification after a close 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, head coach Ruben Amorim expressed his frustration about attending matches, fully aware that his team lacked competitiveness.
The Red Devils are scheduled to clash with Everton on Monday (IST) as part of their final encounter in the current PL Summer Series. So far, United has achieved victories against AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United.
"Honestly, it wasn't how I returned home post-match that bothered me, but rather how I felt before heading to the games, knowing we might struggle," he stated.
"The challenges we faced during games were anticipated. The hardest part was arriving at the games with the knowledge that we weren't likely to be competitive - it was truly frustrating," Amorim shared with BBC Sport.
Amorim's appointment at Manchester United, following the mid-season dismissal of Erik Ten Hag, generated significant anticipation due to the Portuguese manager's impressive track record with Sporting CP. However, after only securing seven wins out of 27 league games, the head coach acknowledges that he has exhausted his initial goodwill, and now his team must deliver.
"While we cannot dictate the results, our playing style, performance, and connection with the fans - all these factors - we will uphold regardless. The credit I had upon my arrival has been spent. Now, we must produce results.
"If I sense before the match that we can be competitive, then we will be fine. I just want to avoid falling back into the mindset that it’s not a 50-50 match," he added.
