Bengaluru, Feb 25 (NationPress) Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey each took two wickets in a single over, delivering early setbacks as Delhi Capitals managed to fend off a late surge by Bharti Fulmani, who scored 40 not out off 29 balls, limiting Gujarat Giants to 127/9 in 20 overs during their Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday.
The pace attack shone for Delhi Capitals, with Kapp recording figures of 2-17, Pandey taking 2-18, and veteran Annabel Sutherland securing 2-20. After opting to bowl first, Delhi Capitals exploited the slight green tinge on the pitch and the conducive seaming conditions, consistently troubling the Gujarat Giants throughout their innings. The spin bowlers continued the momentum in the middle overs, creating a strong possibility of restricting the Giants to below 100 runs.
However, Fulmani struck two sixes—the only maximums of the match—and added four boundaries in her 29-ball knock to inject some hope and dignity into the Gujarat Giants' total.
The decision to elevate Harleen Deol (5, 10b, 1x4) to the opener position backfired as Kapp dismissed her in the fourth over, inducing an edge to keeper Sarah Bryce. Kapp quickly followed that up by sending back Phoebe Litchfield (0), leaving Gujarat Giants struggling at 16/2.
Shikha Pandey dealt two more blows in the next over, dismissing Beth Mooney (10, 11b, 2x4) and Kashvee Gautam (2) in successive deliveries, putting the Giants in a precarious position at 20/4. They concluded the power-play at 31/4.
The Gujarat Giants struggled to recover from the early blows, despite Deandra Dottin managing to hit a few boundaries, scoring 26 off 24 balls with five boundaries, raising some hopes for the Giants.
Nonetheless, Titas Sadhu bowled out skipper Ashleigh Gardner (3) and Sutherland sent Dottin packing, leaving the Giants in dire straits at 60/6 halfway through their innings.
Fulmani then took charge, partnering with Tanuja Kanwar (16 off 24, 1x4) to add 51 runs for the seventh wicket, pushing Gujarat past the 100-run threshold. However, a communication breakdown between them led to Kanwar being run out.
Fulmani continued her valiant effort, ensuring her team reached beyond 120, wrapping up the innings with a four off the final ball.
Both Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals entered the match following losses, but now the Capitals need to chase down 128 runs to reignite their winning streak.
Brief scores:
Gujarat Giants 127/9 in 20 overs (Bharti Fulmani 40 not out; Marizanne Kapp 2-17, Shikha Pandey 2-18, Annabel Sutherland 2-20) against Delhi Capitals.
