Bengaluru, Feb 25 (NationPress) Jess Jonassen, the Australian all-rounder for Delhi Capitals, expressed her surprise at being given the chance to bat higher in the order, scoring an unbeaten 61 to lead her team to a six-wicket victory over the Gujarat Giants with 29 balls remaining in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 match on Tuesday.
With her bowling figures at 1-24, Jonassen capitalized on her promotion to the No.3 spot, smashing 61 not out from 32 balls. She formed a crucial 74-run partnership for the second wicket with Shafali Verma, who contributed a quick 44 off 27 balls, aiding Delhi Capitals in reaching 131/4 in just 15.1 overs.
The Delhi Capitals bowlers were instrumental in securing this win, with Marizanne taking 2-17, and Shikha Pandey claiming 2-18. Annabel Sutherland also contributed with 2-20, limiting the Gujarat Giants to a modest 127/9, despite a late surge from Bharti Fulmani, who scored 40 not out off 29 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.
Jonassen, named Player of the Match, expressed her pleasure at the chance to bat higher up the order.
"I loved it. I was a bit surprised by the opportunity, but I’m always eager to seize it. I had a bit of luck early on, which is part of the T20 format. With the new ball, the seamers got some shape early on. Being shown confidence is a significant boost. It was great that it paid off," Jonassen stated.
She praised her team's versatility, highlighting the contributions of experienced players like Kapp and newcomer Titus Sadhu.
"It’s remarkable; we have nearly all bases covered. Kapp is exceptional and proved that again. It was encouraging to see Sadhu debut and take a wicket. Knowing we have players ready to step up in crucial situations is comforting," she added.
Delhi Capitals' captain Meg Lanning expressed satisfaction with her team's recovery from a previous defeat against the UP Warriorz.
"We bounced back really well. Kapp and Shikha are effective at taking wickets early on, which simplifies things. There’s been some assistance for the bowlers, and it’s about refining our skills each game," Lanning remarked.
The captain emphasized the need to maintain their winning momentum in upcoming matches.
"We must continue winning. As a bowling unit, putting the ball in the right areas has yielded results. It’s gratifying when strategies like promoting Jonassen to No. 3 work out," Lanning concluded during the post-match presentation on Tuesday.
