Bengaluru, Feb 25 (NationPress) Jess Jonassen smashed her first half-century as Delhi Capitals took advantage of exceptional pace bowling to secure a six-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants in their Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 clash at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday.

While chasing a modest target of 128, Jonassen, elevated to bat at No.3, scored 61 not out from 32 deliveries, with Shafali Verma contributing a quickfire 44 off 27 balls, leading Delhi Capitals to 131/4 in just 15.1 overs, clinching victory with 29 balls remaining.

The triumph was largely attributed to the bowlers, as Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey each secured two wickets in a single over, while Annabel Sutherland took two during the middle overs, restricting Gujarat Giants to a paltry 127/9, despite a late surge from Bharti Fulmani, who scored 40 not out off 29 balls.

This win marked Delhi's third of the season, propelling them to the top of the standings after choosing to bowl first against Gujarat Giants.

The innings started poorly for Delhi Capitals as captain Meg Lanning was dismissed by young Kashvee Gautam for three runs. However, Verma and Jonassen combined for a strong second-wicket partnership of 74 runs, steering Delhi Capitals towards victory.

Shafali Verma played cautiously at the outset and later unleashed a barrage of powerful shots, scoring 44 runs and hitting a six and a four against Deandra Dottin. Despite a DRS decision overturn in her favor, she fell victim to Ash Gardner soon after.

Jonassen, building her innings steadily, capitalized on a few missed chances, scoring boundaries off Dottin, Gardner, Meghna Singh, and Gautam.

Though Delhi Capitals lost Jemimah Rodrigues (5) and Sutherland (1), they remained unfazed as Kapp (9 not out) and Jonassen guided the team to victory.

Earlier, the Delhi pacers dominated the match, with Kapp claiming figures of 2-17, Pandey 2-18, and Sutherland 2-20, exploiting the fresh pitch conditions.

Fulmani's late effort included two sixes and four boundaries, ending with a 40 not out, providing some respectability to the Gujarat Giants' score.

Gujarat Giants made a poor start, with Kapp dismissing Harleen Deol (5) early, leading to a quick collapse to 20/4.

Despite Deandra Dottin's brief resistance with 26 runs, the team crumbled under pressure, ending with only 127 runs.

Both teams entered the match looking to avoid consecutive losses, but Delhi Capitals successfully chased down the target of 128.
