Mumbai, Jan 15 (NationPress) Following their opening victory in the Women’s Premier League 2026 against UP Warriorz, batter Laura Wolvaardt expressed her thoughts on the tense conclusion. She mentioned that the Delhi Capitals could have taken more initiative to prevent the match from going to the wire.
While chasing a target of 155, the Capitals secured a comfortable win with seven wickets to spare. The opening duo of Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee set the tone with a solid start. Even though there was a minor hiccup during the mid-innings, Wolvaardt (25 not out off 24) and captain Jemimah Rodrigues (21 off 14) remained composed to steer the team to victory.
Earlier, the bowlers from DC showcased a disciplined performance, limiting UP Warriorz to 154 for 8, highlighted by Marizanne Kapp's impressive 2-24, while Shafali contributed significantly with 2-16, maintaining pressure during the middle overs.
Reflecting on the nail-biting finish, Wolvaardt remarked, “I’m incredibly relieved. It was indeed tense as the situation mirrored the last match. At one point, it was just Jemi and me at the crease, which brought back some memories, but it felt great to cross the finish line successfully this time.”
Discussing the pitch conditions and its challenges, she noted, “The pitch was considerably slower and held more than the previous match, offering more turn. The earlier surface had no turn and was quite smooth, presenting a different challenge. We could have definitely taken more responsibility earlier to avoid such a close finish, but we got the job done.”
Wolvaardt praised her opening partner, Lizelle, emphasizing her impact at the top of the order: “She has been fantastic. I’m thrilled for her contributions. She has been performing consistently in franchise cricket in Australia and has played extensively. It’s wonderful to partner with her again. We had an excellent opening partnership for South Africa, and it’s delightful to bat alongside her once more; she is a destructive player.”
Regarding captain Jemimah and her leadership style, Wolvaardt stated, “Jemi has been exceptional. She’s a great communicator and knows how to motivate the team, extracting the best from everyone. Despite the pressures of being a new captain, she has managed it remarkably well and has been an inspiration for us all.”
The Delhi Capitals are set to clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday as they aim to build on the momentum from their inaugural win of the season.
