Is RCB Just One Win Away from the WPL 2026 Final? Insights from Mandhana
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vadodara, Jan 29 (NationPress) The captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Smriti Mandhana, disclosed that her pre-game message to the team prior to their pivotal match against UP Warriorz (UPW) was consistent with what she had conveyed in earlier matches, emphasizing that they were "just one win away from the final." This focused mindset yielded impressive results on Thursday as RCB secured an eight-wicket victory, becoming the inaugural team to reach the final of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 in Vadodara.
After successfully limiting the UP Warriorz to 143/8, RCB accomplished the chase effortlessly in just 13.1 overs, showcasing their superiority in this crucial match. Mandhana recognized that the Warriorz openers, Meg Lanning and Deepti Sharma, provided a solid start before RCB's bowlers regained control.
“It was fantastic. They began really well with the bat, almost 60-70 without loss -- and from there, the bowlers made a commendable comeback. A particular shoutout to Grace, who bowled for the first time in the tournament and took two vital wickets. Nadine also bowled exceptionally well, and honestly, everyone contributed and bowled brilliantly. When the team performs like that, it’s a delightful sight,” Mandhana remarked to broadcasters post-match.
The RCB leader also emphasized the team's composed and pragmatic attitude following recent challenges, highlighting the need to avoid letting emotions influence their performances.
“In the last two games, we’ve consistently reminded ourselves not to think emotionally or create difficulties for ourselves. We’ve played commendable cricket in the first five matches. In tournaments like this, sometimes we must give credit to the opponents as well - like Nat Sciver-Brunt performing exceptionally in the previous match. So, we reviewed things pragmatically, concentrated on what we could enhance, and worked on it,” she added.
Mandhana reiterated the significance of consistent messaging from the support staff in maintaining the squad's focus during the tournament's critical phase.
“Honestly, the message has remained unchanged from the previous matches -- we kept asserting that we’re just one win away from the final, and that hasn’t altered. The support staff have been very consistent in their communication, regardless of whether we win or lose, and that consistency is incredibly beneficial for us as players. For the last three matches, it was always about being one win away, and I’m thrilled that we achieved that win today and secured our place in the final.”
With their spot in the final confirmed, Mandhana indicated that the team would take a brief respite before shifting their focus to the championship match next week. “Absolutely. The first three or four days, everyone can take a breather and do what they enjoy. Then we’ll return to training hard for the final and be prepared. I’m definitely looking forward to the break,” she stated.
The 2024 champions will now enjoy some downtime before resuming preparations for the final as they aim for their second WPL title.
