Vadodara, Feb 19 (NationPress) Following a meticulous seven-wicket victory over UP Warriorz in WPL 2025, captain Meg Lanning declared this to be their finest display in the tournament thus far.

After restricting UPW to 166/7, Lanning laid the groundwork for the chase with a commendable 69. However, with 32 runs required in the final three overs after her dismissal, seasoned players Marizanne Kapp (29 not out) and Annabel Sutherland (41 not out) rose to the occasion, sealing the win in the last over and wrapping up the Vadodara leg of WPL 2025 on a victorious note.

"I’m thrilled to be on the winning side. We performed significantly better tonight. From the very first ball, I felt a positive vibe. My footwork was on point. We had some world-class talent in the closing moments of the chase. Initially, I thought we could reach 200 after the first six overs! We executed a great comeback. Taking wickets is crucial. There’s always room for improvement, but I genuinely believe this was our best performance in the tournament so far," Meg remarked after the match concluded.

Reflecting on her unbroken 48-run partnership with Annabel, Marizanne mentioned, “Honestly, we didn’t communicate much; we were fortunate to cross the finish line. They possess skilled spinners, and I appreciated Annabel's support. It was a challenging task, but thankfully, we succeeded today.”

Marizanne recognized her dissatisfaction with her bowling results but also noted that Meg required the fifty to regain her rhythm. “The pace hasn’t been satisfactory this season. I’ve often depended on my pace, but fortunately, it improved in the final overs. As an all-rounder, I aim to contribute throughout the game. Meg likely needed this innings; it’s wonderful to see her back scoring runs. We just need to keep enhancing our performance in every match and accumulate more points,” she added.

Annabel, who earned the Player of the Match title for her standout performance of 41 not out and 2-26, expressed her happiness in contributing to the win with both her batting and bowling skills.

“We managed to regain control in the bowling innings. It’s about understanding the conditions and utilizing the longer boundary. Meg was doing well, and then Kappy came in and started hitting the ball effectively. I always endeavor to identify what works as soon as possible. Bowling can be tough sometimes; it's either your day or it isn’t.

"We lost consecutive wickets, otherwise the score might have been different. We had faith in ourselves as a bowling unit and managed to recover after the powerplay. If only we had taken those catches; it’s part of the game, though. The outcome could have shifted (had we taken them). The team is performing well. Even today, 166 was a solid total. Our aim is to play quality cricket as a team," she stated.

The outcome also signifies that UPW concludes their Vadodara stint as the sole winless team, particularly after a series of fielding errors and a slump in the middle overs cost them the match against DC, a point duly acknowledged by captain Deepti Sharma.
