Vadodara, Feb 20 (NationPress) After achieving a solid seven-wicket victory against UP Warriorz in their third match of WPL 2025, Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning expressed satisfaction in concluding the Vadodara leg with two wins and one loss, while also acknowledging that there are areas for improvement.
In the match, Delhi Capitals opted to bowl first and limited UP Warriorz to 166/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Lanning played a pivotal role in the chase, supported by significant contributions from Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp, whose late-game efforts secured the team’s second win of the tournament.
Reflecting on the match, Lanning, who scored 69 off 49 balls, expressed her happiness with the outcome, stating, “It was great to bounce back as a unit. While we may not have put forth our best performance in the previous match against RCB, we took the opportunity to showcase our abilities in this game. We still believe there are aspects we can improve upon. Winning two closely contested matches demonstrates our ability to maintain composure and finish strong.”
Lanning also commended Annabel Sutherland for her match-defining performance. The Australian player excelled both with the ball and bat, achieving figures of 2-26 in four overs before contributing a vital 41 off 35 balls to lead Delhi Capitals to victory.
“Annabel (Sutherland) was impressive with the ball, securing early wickets when we were under pressure. Later, she remained calm while batting. Although she felt she wasn't connecting as well as she wanted, her stability allowed Marizanne Kapp to play freely. It was a critical role, and it was wonderful to see her excel,” Lanning noted.
Lanning and Shafali Verma provided an explosive start for DC, combining for a first-wicket partnership of 65 runs in just 6.5 overs before Verma was dismissed for 26 off 16 balls.
The captain praised the Indian opener for her fast start, saying, “Shafali (Verma) has a singular approach, which is to get us off to a rapid start, playing a crucial role in setting the pace of the innings early on. This alleviates some pressure in the middle and later stages.”
The tournament will now move to Bengaluru, where Delhi Capitals will face UP Warriorz again on Saturday.
