New Delhi, May 17 (NationPress) The Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament, hosted by the Delhi Chess Association, is poised for its 21st iteration, commencing from June 7 to 14 at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi, with an astonishing prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore.
This prestigious tournament, a highlight on the FIDE World Championship Circuit, has significantly contributed to the development of India’s chess talent, showcasing former champions like Arjun Erigaisi, Aravindh Chithambaram, R. Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who achieved his final GM norm here.
Under the supervision of the All India Chess Federation, the Delhi GM Open has emerged as the largest classical chess tournament in Asia, boasting participation from over 2,500 players across more than 15 countries, including 20 Grandmasters, competing in three rating-based categories. This year’s prize pool reflects a remarkable 168 percent increase from the previous edition.
Category A features a prize pool of Rs 51 lakh and is open to internationally rated competitors. Categories B and C, catering to players rated below 1900 and 1700, respectively, will each offer Rs 35 lakh. All matches will adhere to FIDE rules and employ the FIDE Swiss System format, consisting of 10 rounds per section.
On this occasion, Delhi Chess Association president Bharat Singh Chauhan remarked, “For over two decades, the Delhi GM Open has not only mirrored the growth of chess in India but has also been a catalyst for its advancement. We have witnessed the transition of chess from the periphery to the center stage, and this tournament exemplifies that evolution in every aspect, from participation to competition and infrastructure. With each edition, we are fortifying the groundwork for a sustainable, high-performance chess culture in our nation.”
Category A matches will implement a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one, with the top three awards set at Rs 7,00,000, Rs 6,00,000, and Rs 5,00,000 respectively. The top ten finishers in this category will each secure Rs 1,00,000 or more, while special prizes of Rs 1,00,000 will be awarded to the Best Female Player and Best Foreign Player.
Categories B and C will employ a 60-minute-plus-30-second time control and a 30-minute-plus-30-second format, respectively. Entry is complimentary for Grandmasters, International Masters, Women Grandmasters, and Women International Masters.
