Divya Deshmukh, the 2025 Women's Chess World Cup champion and recently named Arjuna Award recipient, will make her Global Chess League (GCL) debut with defending champions Alpine Pipers when Season 4 kicks off in Bengaluru on 5 September. The 20-year-old Indian grandmaster joins one of the strongest rosters in the league's history, headlined by world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.

A Star-Studded Alpine Pipers Line-Up

Deshmukh will line up alongside Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, and Volodar Murzin — a combination that makes the Pipers clear title favourites heading into the defence of their championship. The league's mixed-team franchise format means Deshmukh will compete alongside and against some of the world's best in rapid chess, a format markedly different from the classical events she has predominantly played.

'It's my debut, so I'm definitely very excited. It's not like any other chess tournament. There's going to be a lot of audience for this one, which is going to be really nice. And also, the format is quite different to classical events, so it's fun. Playing in India is always fun,' Deshmukh said in a release.

What Deshmukh Said About Playing Alongside Carlsen

While the prospect of sharing a team with the Norwegian legend has amplified excitement around her debut, Deshmukh was quick to stress that the squad's collective depth matters as much as any single name.

'I guess it's always great to have a teammate that is considered one of the best in the world. But for me, it's also not just Magnus on my team. There are so many great players overall. There's Anish, there's Vidit, and there's also Murzin. So, it's not just about one person. It's about the whole team,' she said.

A New Format, A New City

Deshmukh acknowledged that the rapid, franchise-based team format of the GCL presents a learning curve she is eager to embrace. 'If I can take lessons from it, we will only find out after the event. I can't say anything now. But yeah, I'm very excited to play this format,' she noted. Notably, the tournament will also mark her first proper visit to Bengaluru — she revealed she had previously only passed through the city's airport.

The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4 will be held at The Lalit Ashok in Bengaluru from 5 to 13 September. The season features 36 leading players representing six global franchises in the league's signature mixed-team format. This is the first time the event is being staged in Bengaluru, bringing top-tier chess to a home crowd for Deshmukh and several other Indian players in the field.

With Deshmukh's GCL debut coinciding with a fresh Arjuna Award and a World Cup title, all eyes will be on whether the Alpine Pipers can retain their crown — and how India's newest chess star performs on the franchise stage.
