New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan extended his congratulations to Steve Smith on his remarkable ODI career after the latter announced his retirement from the format, praising him as a fierce competitor and an incredible leader.

Smith, who served as the stand-in captain for Australia during the Champions Trophy in the absence of Pat Cummins, played his final ODI match against India during the semi-finals of the eight-team competition held in Dubai on Tuesday. He will continue his career in the Test and T20I formats for Australia.

India triumphed over Australia by four wickets, securing a spot in the finals where they will compete against New Zealand on March 9.

Over the course of his career, Smith featured in 170 ODIs for Australia, accumulating 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He also made contributions with the ball, taking 28 wickets.

The batsman played a pivotal role in Australia’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023.
