Doha Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Canceled Amid Middle East Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Geneva, March 21 (NationPress) The planned artistic gymnastics World Cup in Doha for April has been officially called off due to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, as announced by the sport's governing body.
According to a statement from World Gymnastics, the executive committee made the decision to cancel the 2026 edition of the Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup in Doha, which was slated for April 15 to 18, following an urgent online vote.
The organization specified, "The event will not be rescheduled."
In light of the escalating conflict initiated by the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, numerous teams had withdrawn their applications for competitions in the Middle East, as reported by Xinhua.
World Gymnastics further clarified that no penalties would be enforced for late applications for the final two Apparatus World Cups taking place in Cairo and Osijek in April.
In a show of solidarity, World Gymnastics expressed support for all those affected by the recent turmoil and reiterated its hopes for a quick return to calm in the region.
Moreover, the organization approved several temporary rule adjustments, including the criteria for ranking evaluations, which will now consider the three highest scores from athletes across five competitions, irrespective of their total participation.
Notably, the governing body stated, "Due to the exceptional nature of this decision, the official regulations will not be modified."
The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has also disrupted other sporting events, including the Formula One calendar, as two races were canceled.
The Formula 1 organization confirmed on Sunday that the races scheduled for next month in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, originally set for April 12 and April 19, have been scrapped due to security and logistical issues arising from the conflict.
This decision follows weeks of uncertainty initiated by the military strikes on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel engaged in military actions against Iran, sparking a broader regional conflict that has complicated travel and heightened security concerns, according to reports from Xinhua.
In response to the strikes, several countries in the region have closed their airspace.
