Was it a difficult match for England? Harry Brook reflects on victory over Nepal in T20 World Cup opener.
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 8 (NationPress) England's captain Harry Brook commended Nepal's audacious play while also recognizing his team's ability to keep their cool in a high-pressure situation. The two-time World Champions narrowly escaped a significant upset, securing a four-run victory in their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 debut at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
With 184 runs to defend, England faced a tough challenge from the Nepalese batsmen, but Sam Curran delivered a composed performance in the final over, successfully defending 10 runs and leading England to a finish of 180/6 in a nail-biting match.
“It wasn't easy at all, but thankfully we managed to pull through. They played exceptionally well, and I heard you mention that not many teams handle Adil Rashid the way they did. They truly challenged us in several moments,” Brook reflected post-match.
Although Brook felt confident during the break, he admitted he didn’t foresee such a close finish. “I believed we were in a strong position to defend that total. I never anticipated it would get this close, but hats off to the Nepalese team for their performance. I wish them the best in the ongoing competition,” he stated.
The England skipper praised top-order batsman Jacob Bethell, who played a crucial part in setting a solid target, along with all-rounder Will Jacks for his impactful late innings.
“Incredible. Beth played brilliantly. The way he was hitting spinners over the boundary was thrilling to see. And then the way Jacksy fitted into his role at number seven, despite not having much experience there, was crucial in our victory,” Brook commented.
Brook also discussed England’s bowling strategy and the challenges faced by senior spinner Adil Rashid, who was targeted by Nepal's batters.
“We have a plethora of options out there. It's unusual for Rash to be hit around like that, and he didn’t bowl his full quota today. It was just one of those days for him, but I’m confident he’ll bounce back stronger,” he remarked.
The England captain specifically commended Sam Curran for his exceptional execution under pressure in the last over, which played a pivotal role in their narrow victory.
“Unbelievable. We both remained quite calm out there, knowing exactly what he needed to do, and he executed it flawlessly,” Brook added.
England's next challenge will be against the West Indies at the same venue on February 11.
