Did Nepal's performance push England to the limit?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 8 (NationPress) England all-rounder Will Jacks praised Nepal’s resilient performance after being awarded Player of the Match in England’s thrilling four-run victory during their ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 opener at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
Jacks was instrumental in England’s success, contributing significantly with the bat as they set a target of 184/7, barely holding off a spirited chase from Nepal, who finished at 180/6.
With a score of 39 runs off just 18 balls, Jacks showcased his prowess by hitting four sixes and a four. His bowling was equally effective, conceding just 17 runs in two overs and claiming the vital wicket of Kushal Bhurtal, who had been performing exceptionally well.
“I believe full credit goes to Nepal. They were absolutely fantastic. We recognized the challenges when we batted, but they played brilliantly against us and brought us close,” Jacks remarked after the match.
Reflecting on his batting, Jacks noted that simplifying his approach allowed him to make the most of his time at the crease.
“It’s great to spend time in the middle. I’ve been a bit out of touch recently, and by keeping it straightforward, the guys in the middle have given me insights about the conditions, making it easier to let the ball come to me,” he stated.
When questioned about Nepal’s strategy in the final over, especially the choice to bowl pace, Jacks recognized the narrow margins that come into play during high-pressure situations.
“You can’t really predict that. It was incredibly challenging. I noticed they were considering options. It seemed there was some hesitation, but overall, they were tactically sound. They truly pushed us to the limit,” he explained.
England's next challenge is against the West Indies at the same venue on February 11.
