Senegalese centre-back Abdoulaye Faye has joined Celta Vigo on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, the Spanish club confirmed on Monday, 3 August. The 21-year-old becomes Celta's third summer acquisition as the northwestern Spanish club gears up for a demanding campaign across La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Europa League.

Celta's Summer Rebuild Takes Shape

Faye's arrival follows the signings of defender Javi Galan from Osasuna and midfielder Aleix Febas from Elche. Celta, who finished sixth in La Liga last season and reached the Europa League quarterfinals, are clearly investing in depth and youth as they return to European competition in 2026-27.

The club's official website described Faye as a player who 'stands out for his defensive strength, his ability to dominate in the air, and especially for his excellent ball distribution and passing accuracy,' adding that he is 'a player with great potential who perfectly fits coach Claudio Giraldez's playing style and will bring youth, talent, and versatility to the Celta defense.'

Faye's Path to Vigo

Faye first arrived in European football with Swedish club BK Hacken in 2023, before making the move to Bayer Leverkusen two years later. Leverkusen subsequently sent him on loan to French side FC Lorient, where he made 17 league appearances. That spell in Ligue 1 appears to have been enough to convince Celta of his readiness for La Liga.

Notably, Faye extended his contract with Leverkusen before completing the Celta move, meaning the loan arrangement carries no option to buy at the end of the campaign — a detail that underlines how highly the Bundesliga champions rate the young defender's long-term prospects.

Febas Signing: The Bigger Picture

Of Celta's three summer arrivals, the acquisition of Aleix Febas on a free transfer stands out for its ambition. The 30-year-old former Real Madrid youth product has signed a three-year deal running through June 2029, just a week after confirming his departure from Elche.

Febas made 36 La Liga appearances for Elche last season, missing only two matches through suspension. He contributed 2 goals and 2 assists, but his value was primarily as the midfield's tempo-setter for one of La Liga's most possession-oriented sides. His experience and technical quality offer Giraldez a proven engine in the centre of the park.
