Phnom Penh, Sep 1 (NationPress) Sangita Basfore felt a wave of relief after her pivotal goal secured East Bengal’s advancement to the Group Stage of the AFC Women’s Champions League 2025/26. This came despite a 1-1 draw against Hong Kong’s Kitchee SC during their final Group E match on Sunday.
Her goal put East Bengal in the lead before Kitchee managed to equalize, taking home a point. The outcome allowed the Indian team to finish with four points, ensuring their progress to the next round, while Kitchee was eliminated, finishing two points behind.
“I’m feeling blessed to have scored for the team and the club,” remarked Sangita, who found the perfect moment to net her first goal in this competition.
East Bengal only needed a draw to move forward, and their early aggression paid off in the ninth minute when Fazila Ikwaput assisted Sangita, who expertly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Leung Wai Nga.
Even though Kitchee equalized through Ho Mui Mei, they couldn't breach a resolute East Bengal defense.
“We played as a team, which is why we qualified. However, I’m not entirely pleased with the outcome as our goal was to win both matches,” the 29-year-old midfielder added. “Things didn’t unfold as we anticipated, and it wasn't our day, so we settled for a draw. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic experience playing alongside my teammates.”
East Bengal began their journey with a 1-0 victory over Phnom Penh Crown FC at the National Sports Complex of Cambodia, where a second-half goal from Fazila Ikwaput secured the win against the hosts.
This marks East Bengal's debut in Asia's top women's club competition, having earned their spot through a dominant 2024-25 IWL campaign, winning 12 out of 14 league games with only one loss.
Looking ahead, the Kolkata-based club is filled with confidence as they prepare for the Group Stage, with the draw scheduled for September 11.
