Atlanta (USA), Aug 4 (NationPress) Manchester United's captain Bruno Fernandes did not hold back his thoughts after the 2-2 pre-season draw against fellow Premier League contenders Everton. He labeled the team’s performance as "lazy" and called for the club to consider acquiring additional players.

Initially, United seemed poised for victory in Atlanta, Georgia, after Mason Mount scored in the second half, restoring their lead following Iliman Ndiaye's equalizer to Fernandes' opener. However, an unusual own goal by Ayden Heaven in the 75th minute allowed Everton to equalize.

This result slightly dimmed the success of United’s tour in the U.S., which had previously included promising wins over West Ham United and Bournemouth.

"It's vital for adapting our play style and integrating new players. We did not want to conclude this way. Our performance today was subpar, and we were somewhat lazy. Laziness can cost us at any moment," Fernandes stated during an interview with NBC Sports.

"Progress is being made, but we are not where we need to be. I don't mean to criticize anyone, but the club is making every effort given the financial constraints they face. It was evident that we needed more competition and quality to motivate the players to elevate their game into the starting eleven, and I believe that’s what the club aims to achieve. I hope we can secure one or two more players to assist with this," he added.

When addressing Fernandes' comments, manager Ruben Amorim responded, "I appreciate that the players recognize the situation. This mindset signifies a positive understanding of our circumstances. The momentum of our tour has been ideal. We had ample time to cultivate a positive environment, and now we return to Carrington (training ground) as we approach the season, aware that there is much more to improve upon," he remarked.

Manchester United is set to start their new Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17.

Point of View
