East Rutherford (USA), July 27 (NationPress) Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim showered accolades on captain Bruno Fernandes after the midfielder scored both goals in a thrilling 2-1 pre-season triumph over West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday.
Fernandes, who had an outstanding season last year with 19 goals and 19 assists in 57 matches across all competitions, earning him the title of United’s Player of the Year, had been linked with a move away, particularly to the Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
However, the 30-year-old clarified last month that while he contemplated the offer, he ultimately chose to remain and compete at the highest level.
When asked about Fernandes' significance to the team, Amorim responded to reporters after the match, "It was evident last season; you can witness it through his goals and assists. But beyond that, I believe he now has more teammates to assist him in leading the group, which is beneficial. He is our leader and incredibly vital, both on the pitch and off it. He exemplifies leadership."
"At times, he becomes frustrated and slightly loses focus on his role. He desires to support his teammates immensely, but that isn't always the best course of action. They must fulfill their responsibilities, and Bruno must, for instance, await the ball to come to him."
United has acquired Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo during the ongoing transfer window, with Amorim emphasizing that their arrival will alleviate some of the attacking pressures on Fernandes.
"Last year, I sometimes felt I had to hold him back to secure more possession during build-up play, and we missed having Bruno close to the box," Amorim remarked.
"With the different attributes Bryan (Mbeumo) and Matheus Cunha bring, and with my appreciation for Kobbie Mainoo's style of play, Bruno will receive more support this season," the manager concluded.
