New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has criticized Marcus Stoinis for his unexpected retirement from ODIs and raised concerns about the timing of this decision and its implications for the team.

Stoinis, who was initially included in Australia’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, declared his retirement from the format last week, prompting selectors to urgently seek a replacement.

On ESPN Australia's Around The Wicket podcast, Finch shared his displeasure regarding the absence of prior discussion from Stoinis with the team management. He feels that the all-rounder should have provided coach Andrew McDonald and captain Steve Smith with a heads-up prior to his selection in the squad.

"When you've been trusted by the selection, coach, and captain—perhaps a bit more of a heads-up? Indicating, 'you know, this is what I am contemplating.' I would be surprised if it was a spontaneous decision too. I’m certain there were plans in motion and dialogues between Andrew McDonald and Marcus Stoinis that led to this conclusion," Finch stated.

The all-rounder participated in Australia's white-ball series against Pakistan, followed by the Big Bash League and later the SA20 in South Africa. With the IPL set to commence right after the Champions Trophy, Finch speculates that the notion of being away for almost five months may have influenced Stoinis' choice to retire from ODIs.

"Ultimately, each player has the choice to determine their future path. Observing Marcus Stoinis over recent years, he seems to have favored the T20 format. Transitioning from Pakistan to India right after a summer filled with cricket at home—this could mean four to five months on the road. This might have played a role in his decision," Finch added.

After Stoinis’ exit, Australia appointed all-rounder Aaron Hardie as his replacement while finalizing their 15-member squad on Wednesday.
