Finch Critiques KKR's Strategy After CSK Defeat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) Former Australian captain Aaron Finch has raised concerns regarding the decision-making of the Kolkata Knight Riders in their defeat to the Chennai Super Kings, particularly during a challenging run chase, suggesting that vague strategies are hampering their performance.
Finch noted that while KKR attempted to be innovative in their batting approach, the execution and tactical choices fell short during Tuesday's match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
"It certainly wasn't an impressive display. There are numerous uncertainties surrounding KKR, especially in that run chase. Many of their tactics were quite questionable. We commended the decision to promote Sunil Narine to the top of the order. Though it did not yield results today (24 runs off 17 balls), it was a different approach. At least they took a chance," Finch remarked to ESPNCricinfo.
However, Finch pointed out that aside from the opening reshuffle, several choices failed to generate the needed momentum throughout the innings.
“Some of the other decisions appeared odd. They were never really in contention. We discussed the combination of Rahane and Raghuvanshi batting together, noting how that can be a significant hindrance. While their partnership wasn't poor, it lacked a unique edge. They did not challenge the bowlers adequately, nor did they reach a point where the opposing captain needed to make substantial adjustments to their team,” he explained.
The former opener also expressed doubts about how the team utilizes its key players, particularly regarding their batting orders. He stated, “With so much experience in the squad, one would expect them to make the right decisions at crucial moments. Having Cameron Green batting at No. 6 is quite unusual for him. I doubt he's played much in that position in T20 cricket.”
Finch elaborated on the difficulties faced by Cameron Green, particularly when entering under pressure against spin bowling.
"Facing two spinners [Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad] right from the start, he only managed to last one ball. For him, walking out to bat against spin in a run chase is particularly daunting," Finch stated. "Team selection shouldn't be based solely on price tags. That would be quite naive. The auction reflects a demand for specific skills, not an obligation to play someone because of their price. He is playing out of position, and his best performances have been at the top of the order," he added.
Finch suggested that alternatives like Tim Seifert could provide more aggressive and flexible options at the top of the order.
"Seifert is available, and he’s a specialist opener. Cameron Green hasn't played much T20 cricket recently due to injuries," Finch noted. "He brings a solid skill set and good form after a successful T20 World Cup. He possesses various shots, including scoops and ramps, making him a versatile player," Finch asserted.
Finch emphasized that Seifert’s adaptability makes him a difficult batter to manage, compelling captains to continually adjust their strategies.
"Against a player like him, captains must engage in extensive planning, given his array of skills. There comes a point when you must acknowledge that a strategy hasn't worked yet. This doesn’t mean the tournament is over for them, but it may be time to rethink the team structure and make necessary adjustments," he concluded.
