Morocco, Jan 19 (NationPress) Senegal may face disciplinary consequences following their temporary exit from the pitch in protest during a thrilling Africa Cup of Nations final against the host nation Morocco, an event that somewhat overshadowed their eventual victory.
The incident occurred in the dying moments of stoppage time when Morocco was granted a penalty after a VAR review, just moments after Senegal's goal was ruled out. Frustrated by the decision, Senegal's head coach Pape Thiaw led his team off the field, bringing the match in Rabat to a halt and causing confusion among the spectators.
After a pause of approximately 16 minutes, the game resumed as the Senegalese players returned to the field. Morocco's Brahim Diaz was unable to convert the penalty, and the match proceeded into extra time, where Senegal clinched victory with a spectacular strike from Pape Gueye.
Although they lifted the trophy, Senegal's celebrations could be dampened by the looming threat of sanctions from the Confederation of African Football.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) released a firm statement denouncing the incident, indicating that it considered the walk-off to be unacceptable behaviour.
“CAF condemns the unacceptable behaviour exhibited by certain players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night,” the statement stated.
The governing body reiterated its position against any actions that compromise match officials or tournament organisers.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate conduct occurring during matches, particularly those directed at referees or tournament officials. CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the case to the appropriate bodies for necessary actions against those found culpable.”
Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane expressed discomfort regarding the protest, emphasizing that abandoning the match would have conveyed the wrong message. He stated that it would be 'crazy' for Senegal not to finish the game.
“It would have been a shame and sad to witness such a scenario. Just imagine heading into the locker rooms with the match stopping there; that would project a negative image of our football,” Mane remarked to reporters after the match.
Mane also underscored the advancement of African football on a global scale, affirming that the sport deserves better. “I’d rather lose than see such incidents occur in our football,” he added.
The final verdict from CAF regarding potential sanctions is anticipated following its disciplinary review.
