Kolkata, Dec 18 (NationPress) Former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly, has filed a complaint with the cyber cell of Kolkata Police against the leader of an Argentinian football fan club. The complaint alleges that the individual made derogatory and defamatory remarks about him, according to police sources.
Ganguly submitted the complaint via email at Lalbazar, the police headquarters, asserting that these comments are damaging to his reputation and causing him significant mental anguish.
Police sources revealed that Ganguly identified one Uttam Saha in his complaint, who is reportedly the president of the 'Argentina Football Fan Club' in Kolkata. Ganguly accused Saha of publicly disseminating false statements about him.
In his letter, Ganguly emphasized that the individual knowingly made malicious, offensive, and defamatory remarks, leveling serious accusations that lack any factual basis.
Throughout his extensive career as an athlete and sports administrator, Ganguly has built a strong reputation both in India and abroad. He expressed concern that there are efforts to damage his image through unfounded claims.
This complaint arises following chaos at the Salt Lake Stadium on December 13 during an event featuring Argentine football star Lionel Messi. The stadium was packed before the event began, with fans eager to see the football icon.
When Messi finally arrived, many fans surged forward to take pictures, leading to a chaotic scene despite the presence of security. Many spectators later expressed frustration at not being able to see Messi.
Messi reportedly departed the field in just 22 minutes, triggering vandalism as chairs and bottles were thrown onto the field, gates were broken, and fans stormed the field. Vandalism was also reported in the stands and restrooms of the Yuva Bharati Krirangan.
In response to the incident, the West Bengal government established an investigation committee. Event organizer Satadru Dutta was arrested, while on Tuesday, state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas resigned, and top IPS officers, including DGP Rajeev Kumar, received show-cause notices.
In this context, inappropriate comments allegedly appeared on social media linking event organizer Dutta to Sourav Ganguly, prompting the former cricketer to seek police intervention.
The cyber cell is set to investigate the complaint and take further legal action as necessary.
