Gareth Southgate, Former England Coach, Honored with Knighthood in 2025 New Year List

London, Dec 31 (NationPress) Gareth Southgate, the former manager of the England men’s senior football team, has been honored in the 2025 New Year Honours List. After guiding England through four significant tournaments and leading the team to two UEFA EURO Finals and a World Cup semi-final, Southgate has been awarded a knighthood. He was previously recognized as an OBE in 2019, according to a statement from the FA.

Having stepped down as the Three Lions boss earlier this year after nearly eight years, following the UEFA EURO 2024 Final against Spain, Southgate concluded his tenure with a record of 102 matches, achieving 61 victories, 24 draws, and 17 losses. He also holds 57 caps and scored two goals for England as a player and managed the England men’s under-21 team for 37 matches before his senior appointment.

“On behalf of everyone at the Football Association, I extend my congratulations to Sir Gareth on this well-deserved accolade. Throughout his journey as a player, coach, and innovator, he has represented the finest qualities of English football,” stated FA chair Debbie Hewitt.

“One of our greatest managers, Sir Gareth’s exceptional coaching record across four major tournaments includes two consecutive EURO finals, matching our best-ever men’s World Cup performance abroad, and maintaining a position in the world’s top five rankings for over five years,” she added.

In addition, former managers such as David Moyes, who managed West Ham, Everton, and Manchester United, has received an OBE for his contributions to association football, while Alan Hansen, former Liverpool and Scotland captain, has been awarded an MBE for his contributions to both football and broadcasting.
