Liverpool, Aug 8 (NationPress) Liverpool FC Women have officially appointed Gareth Taylor as their new head coach. The 52-year-old brings a significant amount of experience from the Women’s Super League and a successful track record in women's football.
Taylor departed Manchester City in March after a five-year tenure that saw him clinch the Women’s FA Cup and League Cup. His time at City also included a narrow miss for the WSL title in the 2023-24 season, where the team fell short on goal difference.
Prior to his role with the women's team, Taylor spent years coaching in City’s men’s academy, most recently with the U18 squad, before transitioning to the women’s side in 2020. His managerial path is built on an 18-year playing career, during which he made nearly 600 appearances in the Football League and scored over 140 goals, in addition to earning 15 caps for Wales.
“I am thrilled to be appointed as Liverpool’s new head coach. The club's history, size, and potential are well-known in the football community, and I am eager to take on this challenge,” Taylor expressed in a statement.
“Our goal is to build a team that fans can take pride in, one that plays attractive football and aims for success.”
Managing director of LFC Women, Andy O’Boyle, stated, “It’s a pleasure to welcome Gareth to our club. The selection process was extensive, and it was evident that Gareth stood out as the best candidate. He has a strong history of developing successful teams and elevating players to new heights.”
“We have a clear vision to restore LFC Women to the top tier of the game, and this appointment is a vital part of that strategy. We want our team to embody the identity of Liverpool football, delighting our passionate supporters. Gareth shares this vision, and we believe he possesses the necessary skills and experience to achieve it.”
Joining Taylor is his former assistant, Chad Gribble, who will also be part of the coaching staff immediately. Amber Whiteley, who served as interim head coach after Matt Beard stepped down in February, will continue with the club as an assistant coach.
Gribble has over a decade of experience at Exeter City, guiding youth development before heading the professional development phase at Doncaster Rovers, where he also worked as assistant head coach.
“I am also pleased to welcome Chad to our club, as his experience with Gareth will be invaluable,” O’Boyle added.
“Furthermore, I would like to extend my gratitude to Amber for her outstanding contributions alongside the coaching team in recent months. We are excited to have her continue her coaching journey with us as she develops into a leading coach.”
Taylor has already commenced work with the squad as they gear up for the new season. He will lead the team during Saturday's behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa at Bodymoor Heath Training Ground.
