Rome, June 19 (NationPress) The newly appointed head coach of Italy, Gennaro Gattuso, expressed his commitment on Thursday to revitalize the team spirit and cultivate a 'family' environment within the national squad, aiming for qualification in the upcoming World Cup after the Azzurri's absence from the last two tournaments.
Gattuso succeeds Luciano Spalletti, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Norway in a World Cup qualifier. Spalletti's era officially concluded after Italy secured a 2-0 victory over Moldova.
"It's a dream come true, and I certainly hope to be up to the task. I know the job won't be easy, but nothing in life is easy," remarked Gattuso.
Affectionately nicknamed 'Ringhio' (Growler) due to his intense playing style, the 47-year-old Gattuso has earned 73 caps for Italy and was pivotal in their 2006 World Cup victory.
Fans are optimistic that his passionate and resolute character can lead the four-time world champions to qualify for the next World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Currently positioned third in Group I of World Cup qualifiers, Italy is set to face Estonia at home on September 5, with a subsequent match against Israel three days later.
"My goal is that anyone who steps onto the training ground arrives with great enthusiasm and to foster a family atmosphere," stated the coach.
Gattuso spent the majority of his playing career at AC Milan, securing two Champions League titles and two Serie A championships. He later returned to the club as head coach from 2017 to 2019. As a manager, he won the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2020.
"The primary aim is to establish a sense of belonging. We must excel in our reactions; only those who respond and give their all can emerge from this situation," he added.
