Shubman Gill has made no secret of where India's priorities lie heading into the Galle Test against Sri Lanka: a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval in June 2027. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on 14 August, the India skipper outlined the steep climb ahead — and why this series carries outsized importance for the side.

The WTC Equation

India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings and need to win the bulk of their remaining matches to secure qualification. “The main goal is to play the World Test Championship final, which is next year. We have got about nine Tests, and I think we have to win around six or seven to have a good chance of qualifying. So in terms of that, I think this is a very important series for us,” Gill said.

The series opener also carries historical weight: it marks India’s 600th Test match and the 50th Test played at the iconic Galle venue — a fixture that falls, fittingly, on India’s Independence Day.

Early Arrival Pays Off

Unlike previous tours where compressed schedules left little room for acclimatisation, India arrived in Sri Lanka ahead of schedule and played a warm-up fixture against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo. Gill credited the additional preparation time as a key advantage for a relatively inexperienced squad.

“It’s never easy for the players to be able to adapt, and most of the players in this team require a bit of time to be able to adjust to the conditions. The extra time in preparation definitely helps,” he said.

Prasidh Krishna Steps Up in Bumrah’s Absence

The absence of Jasprit Bumrah is the most prominent selection talking point, but Gill expressed confidence in those who will fill the void. He reserved particular praise for pacer Prasidh Krishna, who impressed during the warm-up game.

“Prasidh has recently been bowling the best that I have ever seen him bowl,” Gill said. He also highlighted Gurnoor Brar as a potent option: “Gurnoor Brar is excellent as he can extract bounce with an old ball at a good pace.” Gill framed Bumrah’s absence as an opportunity rather than a setback, urging the pace unit to “step up and leave a mark on the series.”

Devdutt Padikkal and the Galle Wind Factor

Left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal earned a mention for his prior experience at the venue with India A, with Gill backing him to make an impact. “He has got all the skills and the potential to succeed in this format,” the skipper said.

Gill also flagged an underappreciated tactical variable at Galle — the open ground’s wind. “In grounds like this, which are open, wind sometimes plays a crucial part. As a batsman, even in team meetings we talk about if we want to take on a spinner, we have to see if the wind is with us or against us,” he explained, noting that most Indian venues are enclosed by stands, making this an adjustment unique to overseas conditions.

With the WTC clock ticking and a landmark Test on the horizon, India’s performance at Galle could prove pivotal to their qualification hopes heading into 2027.
